Social Media Do’s and Don’ts During Divorce

We live in a day and age where social media use runs rampant—you may have even stumbled upon this blog after seeing it posted on our Facebook!

While social media was designed to be friendly and positive, there are instances where poor social media use can lead to severe problems that can follow you for years.

If you’re on social media and going through a divorce or child custody legal problem, it’s important to follow these do’s and don’ts to avoid extra issues with your ex-spouse.

DON’T stalk your ex’s every move on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. This can lead to you missing out on important things that are happening in your (and your children’s) own lives. It’s time to learn to live without worrying about what they’re doing.

DON’T post any disparaging comments about your soon to be ex or even their family. Remember, social media is “social”, and it’s quite common that a mutual friend may see your post and show your ex. This could be used against you in court.

DO not complain about your children or any parental duties—even if you’re just trying to be funny or make a joke. How you mean something doesn’t always come through on social media, and this could be used against you in court during a custody case.

DO not highlight any new relationships. You still have unresolved problems with your ex and are going through a divorce or custody proceeding—this can reflect negatively on you. Refrain from posting any photos of you and a new beau—instead, keep these private and enjoy the time without being public.

DON’T change your relationship status until things have been finalized in court. Why? Because this change can prompt questions and comments from other social media friends—and anything you post can be used against you in a court of law if someone takes a screenshot. It’s better to wait until after your day in court.
