Don’t Do It Yourself Divorce – Michigan – ChooseGoldman

It is easy to understand why many people choose to get divorced without the assistance of an attorney. Often they may be strapped for cash, and in others they may feel that a lawyer is unnecessary because they agree on how they want their divorce to be settled. While I do not doubt that there are plenty of people out there who are capable of doing the dirty work on their own, I would always recommend hiring an attorney for any legal matter, divorces are no exception. Doing a divorce yourself is not recommended.

Why Do I Need a Lawyer?

Most people who feel ill or have been in an accident would not hesitate to go to the emergency room or the doctor’s office. Many illnesses and other injuries could be easily diagnosed with all the information available on the internet these days. If you broke a leg, and you wanted to set the leg and treat it on your own, you could likely learn how to do that. For some reason, many people think that their legal affairs are not as important as their health. I suppose that could be true to an extent, but we should not short change the effect a sloppy settlement agreement can have or the burden that a one-sided agreement can create.

While many issues contained within a divorce judgment could be modified later on, not all can be, and the ones that do often require additional proof. Lawyers point their clients in the right direction. They inform their clients of the law, and then they apply the law to their client’s situation. How often a client confers with a lawyer is really up to the client. At the very least, it would seem to make sense to have a lawyer review any document that you or your spouse plans to submit to the court.

Contact a Michigan Family Law Attorney For a Free Consultation

I once heard another lawyer say that people didn’t seek him out because they wanted him to attend a hearing or draft a document on their behalf. Instead, he said that they went to him because they wanted the peace of mind of knowing that what he did for them was done correctly; and that there would be no second-guessing later on. Goldman & Associates are experienced attorneys who provide free consultations. Why wouldn’t you take advantage of that? Call us today at 586-268-2400.
