Divorce begins with the filing of a lawsuit generally in the county where one or both of the parties reside. The case will be randomly to a family court judge in that county and that court will issue a summons & complaint will be served. These may be served via process server, bailiff, etc. Once that person is served in the state of Michigan, they then have 21 days to answer. The two firms will get together and determine what we are and aren’t fighting for. The court will schedule a number of meetings so that the court can be aware of the progress of the case. The duration of your case can be determined if there are or aren’t children, as well as the complexity of the case.
