After you hire an attorney and provide your intake & relevant data to the firm, the attorney will draft a complaint for divorce. The complaint has specific requirements, will be filed in the circuit court in the county where you reside and randomly assigned to a family court judge once filed. The court will send the summons and complaint to the law firm you hired to be turned over for service. You would have to send these papers to the opposing party by using a bailiff, process server, certified mail or other various methods. Once the opposing party receives the papers, they have generally 21 days to answer, which will be typically the time they will hire their own lawyer.
