Is Coronavirus Affecting Your Divorce?

While everyone’s lives have been affected by the recent Coronavirus pandemic, those going through a divorce may be wondering what happens next. In Michigan, courts have been closed and law firms have been forced to work remotely. While judges will soon be handling remote cases, it will take some time to get through the back-log.

At our firm, we’re happy to still be open and accepting clients should you need assistance. Remember, we’re all in this together and you are not alone.

Here are a few things to consider if you’re going through a divorce or child custody arrangement and feel like it’s been put on hold:

1. Just because your case has stalled, it doesn’t mean that you should suddenly settle or make arrangements with your ex that you don’t agree with. This too shall pass, and you’ll be able to have your time in front of a judge or in mediation.

2. Take this time to consider what you really want. If your divorce was moving too fast or in the wrong direction, you can now regroup and examine if your stipulations were being met or not, or if you felt you’d been over-compromising.

3. Consider virtual mediation. If you don’t want to wait to continue your divorce, virtual mediation can happen and be legally binding. This will involve you, your ex and a mediator who can help you reach agreements relating to divorce and child custody.
