The Top Five Reasons for Divorce

When you enter a marriage, rarely do you do so thinking it will end in divorce. Yet today, nearly half of all marriages end in exactly that manner.

As divorce attorneys in Michigan, we’ve seen common and uncommon reasons that have lead couples down that path.

Here are the five most frequent reasons we see couples get divorced because of.

1. Infidelity. While this can be related to other reasons on this list, infidelity itself is a top cause of divorce. This can be a very painful thing to deal with, and often times, partners may try to work it out before seeking a divorce. In the long run, it can be tough to overcome.

2. Lack of commitment. When you enter into a marriage, you need to be 100% committed to putting the marriage and your spouse first, above your own needs. Sometimes, people think they’re totally committed to their spouse, but over time, realize they aren’t. If you’re beginning to notice that you don’t seem like a priority, have a conversation with your partner before things get worse.

3. Too much fighting. Did you know that over half of divorced couples have cited “too much conflict” as a top reason for their divorce? Frequent arguments can lead to the breakdown of a marriage, especially because the root of fighting is often poor communication. If you notice your partner and you fighting more often, take a step back and ask yourself to focus on positive communication instead.

4. Money issues. Sometimes, financial problems cause extreme burden that can lead to arguments and marital strain. This typically isn’t the number one reason that couples seek a divorce, but it’s a common stressor that can be “added on top” of another reason for separation.

5. Entering the marriage too young. Young love is a beautiful thing—but it doesn’t always last. Sometimes, marriages begin without the spouses knowing who they are and what they truly want.
